Survival Guide: 8 Rules To Beat The Heat In Style

In the heat of the summer it can be difficult to decide on what wear to stay comfortable without sacrificing your style. Luckily we have some quick and easy rules to follow to maintain your cool. More than a style guide, this a survival guide to beat the heat while maintaining your chic and stylish appearance!

LOOSE FITTING ATTIRE

With temperature's rising, it's too hot to be constrained by a tight fitting outfit. When the thermometer starts reaching temps of 90+ a shift dress is a girl's best friend. Pick clothing with a lot of movement that doesn't hug your body. Combat looking frumpy with long necklaces and some fierce heels. Jane from FitFabFunMom beats the heat in her little white dress.

SAY NO TO SYNTHETICS

A great tip to beating the heat this summer is sticking to clothes made with natural fibers such cotton, linen or flax. Synthetic, man-made fibers can trap in body heat, making you uncomfortable. Not to mention they feel scratchy on your skin and pill easier. Cool, cotton blouses are great for both the office and cocktail attire. Check out Elshane of Elshane’s World for some natural inspiration.

GO BRIGHT

I have a confession to make: Black is not only a staple in my closet, but about 75% of it… a habit I am working hard to break, especially during the summer. Wearing color will not only make you feel more cheerful, but will also help you beat the heat!! If you aren't a color person, try implementing some navy pieces as a start. Blogger Jessie Kass is looking stunning in her bright red dress. Last week we mentioned our crush on white lace dresses, but here is a great way to wear lace in a color.

BRING ON THE PRINTS

Let’s talk about sweat… awkward I know, but it happens to the best of us (and always at the most inopportune times)!! A great trick to help distract from unfortunate sweat stains are fun patterned outfits. It makes sense if you think about it, because the marks will blend in and the eye will be drawn to the print. Caitlin from Southern Curls & Pearls is rocking an adorable floral dress, and she looks so cute no one is going to pay attention to any imperfections that might be there.

WEAR DARING CUTOUTS

Cutouts are in, and in my opinion here to stay. Fortunately, the hotter months are the perfect time to experiment with cutouts, because people are already accustomed to wearing less clothing. We love Margo from Margo & Me's cutout romper. It shows just the right amount of skin without being overly sexy.

SAY NO TO SKINNY JEANS

See tip #1. The only thing worse than squeezing into a pair of skinny jeans, is trying to squeeze into them when you’re sweating. Boyfriend jeans were created for the summer heat, so pair them with a loose button-down or tasteful white T-shirt. We are obsessed with Molly from A Piece of Toast's 4 tips to wearing boyfriend jeans. She wears hers with the perfect balance of femininity!!

WEAR SPORTY BUSTIERS

This summer, give up lace lingerie and avoid bras with uncomfortable reinforcements. The only bras I'm wearing this summer are sporty bustiers or bandeaus that look sensational in electrifying shades hidden from view under blouses with deep cuts or under loose shirts. You can go from work to play to work-out, all in the same bra. We are obsessed with Molly from A Piece of Toast's "nearly naked" sports bra. So cute!!

CHOOSE ACCESSORIES CAREFULLY

Everyone knows accessories can make or break an outfit, and the same goes for beating the heat. Sun hats and comfortable shoes are a must. Thick heels are not only convenient, but also trendy. Dainty layers of jewels will help you accessorize without going too bulky. Last but not least, you have to have a fabulous pair of shades and fully functional bag!! FitFabFunMom's summer outfit looks fresh and ready to take on the day.
